It is easy for us to pray when we have problems, but when the problem is over, it is not easy to come back and give thanks to God. It is important for us that Christmas occurs at the end of the year. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on what God has done for us throughout the year.

In our first reading, the parent of Samuel returned to give thanks to God who has heard their prayer and blessed them with a child. They did not just give thanks. They also made a Thanksgiving sacrifice, by offering him back to God.

Mary in our gospel also gives thanks for what God has done for her by making her the mother of Christ. One way she gave thanks was by singing a song of praise to God, but she also made the sacrifice of staying with Elizabeth for three months, which is until she gave birth to John. What has God done for me and what is my Thanksgiving sacrifice?
